Russian verb conjugation: first and second conjugation endings

Russian verbs change their ending for each person. Most follow one of two patterns, the first conjugation with -ешь, -ет and the second with -ишь, -ит, plus a handful of irregular verbs.

The two patterns

The ending of the ты form tells you which pattern a verb follows.

1st conjugation
-у/-ю, -ешь, -ет, -ем, -ете, -ут/-ют Most verbs in -ать and -ять, and many others. читать: я читаю, ты читаешь, они читают
2nd conjugation
-у/-ю, -ишь, -ит, -им, -ите, -ат/-ят Most verbs in -ить, plus a set of verbs in -еть and -ать. говорить: я говорю, ты говоришь, они говорят
Irregular
Learn them separately хотеть, бежать, есть and дать mix the patterns or have their own forms. хотеть: я хочу, ты хочешь, мы хотим, они хотят
-тся or -ться
Reflexive verbs The infinitive ends in -ться; the он, она and они forms end in -тся. учиться → он учится, они учатся
