The particle changes the meaning

In a phrasal verb the particle is part of the meaning: look after, look up and look back on are different verbs.

Learn the verb and particle together. look after (care for) · look up (search) · give up (stop)
Three parts
Some take a particle and a preposition. look back on · look forward to · get on with
Pronouns
With separable verbs a pronoun goes in the middle. Turn it off. (not Turn off it)
